Dr. Agatston is a cardiologist and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Medical School. His South Beach Diet has helped thousands of overweight individuals lose weight and shrink their hip to waist ratio.
There are essentially three phases to the South Beach Diet.
In phase one the South Beach dieter restricts proteins to 28% of caloric consumption, carbohydrates to 10% and fats to 62% (13% saturated, 17% monounsaturated and 32% polyunsaturated).
In phase two of the South Beach Diet the dieter consumes 30% of their calories as protein, 27% as carbohydrate and 43% as fats (8% saturated, 18% monounsaturated, 17% polyunsaturated).
Phase three of the South Beach Diet consists of 33% protein, 28% carbohydrate and 39% fats (8% saturated, 17% monounsaturated, 14% polyunsaturated).
Phases one and two of the South Beach Diet each last two weeks. Phase three lasts eight weeks.
