Atkins Diet

Dr Atkins - Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet is not one diet plan but a series of phases in which the dieter changes food consumption parameters in each phase.

It was 1972 when Dr. Atkins’ diet was first introduced to the public.

Dr Atkins sold over 10 million copies of his book. It is estimated that more than 20 million people have tried the Atkins Diet.

The Atkins Diet is really a life style change.

It places emphasis on exercise, consumption of nutritionally rich unprocessed foods, vitamin supplements and avoidance of processed foods, carbohydrates, sugar rich foods, bread, pasta, cereal and high starch vegetables.

The Atkins Diet restricts carbohydrates to around 15 grams per day during the first phase of the diet, which lasts 2 weeks. Each week 5 grams of carbohydrate are added to the diet until you establish your maximum carbohydrate consumption level for weight maintenance. This is the highest number of grams of carbohydrate per day which you can consume without starting to gain weight.

The first phase lasts fourteen days. The purpose of this phase is to induce benign dietary ketosis. This condition can be detected by use of a ketosis stick and is the result of the body producing a fat mobilization substance. The fat mobilization substance (FMS) forces your body to burn up stored fat. The result is weight loss. Most vegetables and almost all fruits are not allowed during this period.

The second phase of the Atkins Diet is a continuation of phase one with an adjustment to 40 Grams of carbohydrates per day. This allows more vegetables consumption and is continued at this level until the desired weight goal is achieved.

In Dr. Atkins’ Diet, it is important to recognize that medical supervision is required. Tests for blood sugar, lipoproteins and cholesterol are needed to insure safe weight loss body chemistry.

The third phase of the Atkins Diet is begun when ten to fifteen pounds from target weight. It is at this point that carbohydrates are added at the rate of five grams per week until less than a pound a week is being lost.

The fourth phase of the Atkins Diet stops ketosis and stabilizes body chemistry to produce a better-educated and aware dieter with a new understanding of the relationships between food groups and food nutritional values.

The Atkins Diet is presented here so that the reader may understand the evolution of successful diets and make an educated decision as to what’s best for them.
